Fred Smith is one of the most decorated high school players in Western Massachusetts history, known as a dominant scorer and anchor of one of the greatest high school basketball teams ever assembled in New England. [1]

🏀 Springfield Central High School Era (1989–1991)

• The 1991 State Championship: Smith was a star forward for the legendary 1991 Springfield Central High School Golden Eagles. That team went 25-0, finished ranked #17 in the entire nation, and is widely considered the most dominant squad in Massachusetts high school history. [1, 2]

• Elite Scoring Threat: While playing alongside future 10-year NBA veteran Travis Best and future UMass star Edgar Padilla, Smith was a powerhouse in his own right, averaging 20 points per game during their historic run. [1]

• Hall of Fame Induction: Because of his elite high school career, Smith was officially inducted into the Springfield Public Schools Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2017. [1]

🎓 Division 1 College Career

• Howard University: Thanks to his standout performances and recruitment exposure at Central High, Smith earned an athletic scholarship to play NCAA Division I basketball for the Howard University Bison. He played there for four years before graduating. [1]
