Derek William Kellogg (born June 20, 1973, in Springfield, Massachusetts) is a longtime college basketball coach and former standout player, deeply rooted in the Springfield and UMass basketball communities.

High School Career

Kellogg starred at Cathedral High School in Springfield. He was a two-time Massachusetts All-State selection and earned McDonald’s honorable mention All-American recognition. As a senior he averaged 24.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He was part of the strong local basketball scene of the late 1980s/early 1990s and competed alongside (and against) other Springfield standouts such as Travis Best.

College Playing Career (UMass Minutemen, 1991–95)

A 6-foot-3 point guard, Kellogg played four seasons under John Calipari. The Minutemen went 111-24 overall during his career, winning four consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships—the second team in NCAA history to achieve that streak. They reached the NCAA Tournament every year, including a Sweet 16 appearance in his freshman season and an Elite Eight run in 1994–95.

Career averages: 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game across 120 contests. He ranks among UMass’s all-time leaders in assists (453, still near the top) and three-point percentage (38.1%). He was a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection, earned third-team All-A-10 and A-10 All-Tournament honors as a senior, and served as team captain his final two seasons.

Coaching Career

After graduating from UMass in 1995 (degree in real estate/finance), Kellogg began coaching:

• Assistant at George Mason (1997–99) and Youngstown State (1999–2000).

• Assistant under Calipari at Memphis (2000–08), including a run to the 2008 NCAA championship game.

He returned to his alma mater as head coach of the UMass Minutemen from 2008–17 (nine seasons). Record: 155-137 overall. Highlights included three consecutive 20-win seasons (2011–14), NIT appearances (including a semifinal run in 2012), and leading the team to the 2014 NCAA Tournament (first since 1998) as a No. 6 seed after a strong regular season that included a national ranking as high as No. 12. He was fired after the 2016–17 season.

Kellogg then became head coach at LIU (LIU Brooklyn / LIU) from 2017–22. In his first season he guided the Blackbirds to the NEC Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. Overall head-coaching record at major schools: 229-211 (.520).

He returned to UMass as an assistant under Frank Martin for the 2022–23 season before joining the staff at Creighton as an assistant coach (2023–present).

Kellogg remains closely connected to Springfield and Western Massachusetts basketball. He and his wife Nicole (also a UMass alum) were married at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
